PokeMonday 9-26-2016: En Amorado con Coronado!

Hey there hi there ho there to all you Awesome PokePeople! I hope everyone is having a good week so far, and if you’re in SoCal, I hope you’re finding a way to beat this heat wave! Whooo doggy, it’s a hot one all of a sudden, isn’t it? Well, it’s a good thing that this weeks PokeMonday is all about cool breeze’s and the water Pokémon of Coronado Island!
coronado-islandThe beautiful island of Coronado rests right off the coast of San Diego, connected by a towering bridge, reminiscent of the bifrost which connects Midgard with Asgard. And much like Asgard, Coronado is a mythical place, it’s almost like stepping into another world. The view driving across the bridge is just magnificent, and it really gives the feeling of dimensional travel due to it’s height and the sights visible at it’s peak. As soon as you cross the bridge, you’ll be directed straight through the heart of downtown Coronado. Filled with unique eateries and tons of shopping establishments, I got the feeling that I was driving through a movie set replica of Beverly Hills. img_5443But then I opened up Pokemon Go and got an even bigger surprise! Downtown Coronado was FULL of pokestops! Boom. All of a sudden my wife and I are cruising down the boulevard just swiping at every pokestop we come across. And let me tell you, we came across a lot of pokestops on our drive to our hotel. Our hotel, by the way, was the grand Loews Coronado Bay Resort, which is situated on it’s own personal peninsula from Coronado island. This peninsula proved to be a gold mine for hunting pokemon!
img_5436 Such a wide variety would present itself continuously through the day, with or without a lure or incense active. I took a screenshot of one such incident, actually. You can see in the photo I was just walking around, no incense or lure, and all these pokemon just pop up. It was great! I highly recommend taking a trip to Coronado, whether it’s just for a day, or if you plan a three day weekend. You won’t be disappointed! img_5458 img_5442
Until next time, PokePeople, I hope you have a great week and happy hunting! ebbf504d9867da499d94f573240a2271

Marvel Tsum Tsum zoom! Let me hear you say “Way-Oh!”

Tsum Tsum. Marvel Tsum Tsum. Every time I say it I’m reminded of those Mazda commercials from the early 2000’s. “zoom zoom.” And just like the vehicles displayed in those Mazda commercials, Marvel Tsum Tsum is fast paced, intuitive, slick, and lots of fun.

img_5515The Marvel brand, in it’s continued attempt at total global domination, has teamed up with XFlag Inc. and NHN PlayArt to release another wonderful game for your mobile device, this time forgoing the super muscles for super cuteness! Marvel Tsum Tsum is a fast paced puzzle powerhouse that leaves you tickled and tense for more adorable action. Tsum Tsums, for those who’ve recently unearthed themselves from underneath a rock, are the fluffy stackable gerbil/pill shaped craze that all started in Disney Japan and is slowly, and adorably, making its way all over the map. Marvel Tsum Tsum capitalizes on that cuteness craze by cleverly crafting an addictive connect-a-like-n-collapse game that’s fast paced and fun! Think along the lines of connect the dots and candy crush, but a whole lot cuter, and on crack.

The idea is simple enough: drag your finger across the screen connecting three or more of the cute and cuddly versions of your favorite Marvel characters to score points and build your power meter. The more Tsum Tsum’s you chain together, the faster your mega charge will fill up. Once it’s full, activate your mega charge and perform powerful combos for massive points. Repeat. It’s perfect for on-the-go gaming fun, and with wonderful sound effects and triumphant music, the adventure has never been cuter!

But worry not, faithful reader, Marvel Tsum Tsum isn’t all about cuddly Agent Coulson’s or lovable Loki’s, there’s a degree of challenge thrown in amongst the cuteness. There are multiple worlds that you can visit, and each world is littered with stages that need clearing, stars that need collecting, and bad guy bosses that need battling! Yes, battling. Within each stage is a chance to obtain 3 stars, each star awarded for achieving a pre-designated point total per stage. Once enough stars are collected, more worlds with more stages are become accessible to you. Every few stages or so, you will come across a nefarious ne’er do well. The rogues gallery presented in Marvel Tsum Tsum ranges from a Hydra Minion to Green Goblin and even Ronin the Accuser.

As the game progresses, your character will level up, and in doing so earn points that will also increase the effectiveness of your mega charge. As you level, you will also be able to collect more hero tsum tsum characters, each hero with a different special power. If you select Hawkeye as your special tsum tsum, he will fire a volley of arrows across the screen.  Iron Man’s special skill will fire a photon cannon that will  take care of a whole row of tsum tsums for you. Each character skill is different, and each skill has it’s own special perk to bring to the table. All in all, Marvel Tsum Tsum is a fun and magical title, sure to satisfy young Marvel fans and veteran finger flingers alike.

PokeMonday 9/19/2016 : South Bound To San Diego, the Search For Gyrados continues!

Happy PokeMonday to all you Awesome PokePeople out there! We hope that you’ve had a good week, just like we have. 😉 After my Magikarp adventures in Baby Beach, Dana Point, I decided to drive a little further south and see what the hunting was like in San Diego, and I was not disappointed!

dc06ba20-89e5-4a3f-9558-010b5637ee15kkr-resort-logoimg_5401My beautiful wife and I spent this past weekend at the wonderful Kona Kai Resort & Spa, on Shelter Island in San Diego. Shelter Island is a small little peninsula that plays home to only a handful of luxurious resorts, and plentiful pokemon! If you’re fortunate enough, like my wife and I were, you might even get a pokestop right in your hotel room.

There were plenty types of water pokemon on display, from Tentacruels to Seels, and my favorite: Magikarps. I barely needed to use any lures or incense while I was down in San Diego, the pokemon would just continually spawn. It was amazing! I was even fortunate enough to find a Grimer!

For those of you who would also want to check out some local color, img_5412located a few minutes away is Point Loma Base. Or at least, former base. Now the former military base is a living area and social hub, complete with museums, magikarps, parks, left over cannons and a Luna Grill. While you’re there, be sure to visit Comickaze and the San Diego Comic Art Gallery. Comickaze is a great store, with shelfs upon shelfs of graphic novels and collectibles, more than enough to break the budget of any comic collector. However, it was the San Diego Comic Art Gallery that had the superhero fan boy inside my soul doing backflips. Inside the gallery was an extensive collection of Transformers toys, as well as Godzilla memorabilia and other art house collectibles. If none of that catches your fancy, then maybe the trove of pokestops is enough to entice you to take the trip to Point Loma, San Diego.

That’s it for this week. Next week I’ll be looking at another location in San Diego, Coronado Island! Until then, be sure to look both ways before crossing the street, and always walk with your buddy – for candy reasons. 😉  See you next week, and Happy Hunting! ebbf504d9867da499d94f573240a2271

Kongregate, An Indie Game Incubator From GameStop

We were delighted to see a few iOS games in attendance last week at GameStop Expo. iOS games are so often built by independent developers that they aren’t always able to make it out to events of this size. Luckily for the four games we got our hands on, their developers partnered with a GameStop company, Kongregate.

Family Guy Sexy Peter Giveaway from Indie Game Incubator, KongregateKongregate had a fairly small booth, but it was the Sexy Peter giveaway that really caught our attention. Little did we know that there was much more value in that booth than we initially thought. It turns out that Kongregate is somewhat of an indie game incubator. Developers can submit their free-to-play games to Kongregate’s website where they can test their game ideas and build an audience. This allows developers to gauge interest in an idea before investing a lot of time and effort into the mobile app development process.

Kongregate brought three of their popular titles that had been made into iOS apps along with one that was soon to be released. Those titles were Pocket Politics, Tinker Island, Animation Throwdown, and Buffalo Bison. Each of the games had their own unique gameplay style, but every one that I played had me hooked for hours. Stay tuned for a detailed review of each of these titles.

I was impressed not only by the quality of each game, but how Kongregate represented the indie developers that they supported. I had a chance to speak with one of the game producers in the booth, Peter Eykemans, about their business and was pleasantly surprised to hear about their focus on indie game developers. I had no idea that GameStop was a game publisher as well as a retail outlet. It’s great to hear of companies using their popularity for good, and I’m sure that we’ll continue to see many more great titles coming from Kongregate in the future.
